Dr. Lakelyn Eichenberger, Home Instead gerontologist and caregiver advocate, was a recent guest on the Health Power podcast to talk about ways those in the sandwich generation can balance caregiving with parenthood.
According to Pew Research, more than one in 10 U.S. parents with children under the age of 18 are also caring for an aging adult. As the average life expectancy continues to increase, and families wait longer to have children, the demands on those caring for generations on either side only intensifies.
“People aren’t necessarily talking about it,” Eichenberger said. “So it feels very isolating. They often feel the struggle of being a good parent and being a good son or daughter.”
