As Our Parents age, Staying in Their Home is the Best Choice
We are talking to a lot of daughters and sons over the pandemic and a trend we are hearing is that their aging parents do not want to move from their traditional home. They want to be surrounded by their family, friends, and neighbors as they age. The challenge is that these daughters and sons are finding the added stress and strain of helping their parents while they have busy lives themselves. They are torn between what they have been told that as you age you downsize and move to an assisted living facility or care home and your family comes to visit you. This all sounds appealing, but the pandemic has changed many things, including family’s perceptions of safety and facility care. Boomers witnessed the tragedy that occurred during the pandemic in Canada’s long-term-care and retirement facilities and are wary of that future.
By March of 2021, more than 50 per cent of all deaths from COVID occurred in nursing and seniors’ homes, according to Public Health Agency of Canada. This 5th wave of Omicron has seen record numbers of infections across the country and facilities again are not immune to outbreaks. Unfortunately, again many seniors are isolated in their rooms, and it has been very difficult on the staff to care for them.
An RBC survey released found that 83 per cent would choose staying at home with care as needed. This is a much-preferred option to needing to move to a facility. Remaining at home allows seniors the comfort they have become used to and with proper Home Care, your elderly loved one can also be safe.
As a result, many daughters and sons are reluctant to move their loved ones. So, the solution is to keep them in their traditional homes with Home Care provided by Home Instead CAREGivers!
