CAREGiver of the Month - April 2022

Congratulations, Akila J., for being our Caregiver of the Month – April 2022!!

Akila joined our team a few months ago but her diligence, compassion and professionalism have earned her enormous appreciation from her clients and team members alike. We are fortunate to have someone of her talent and sincerity as part of the Home Instead team!! Being a long tenured caregiver, Akila’s skill and rich experiences with seniors has helped add value to the daily lives of her clients and has enhanced their safety and wellbeing as the continue living at home.

Where were you born? Where did you grow up?
I was born and grew up in Colombo, Sri Lanka

How long have you worked at Home Instead?
I have worked at Home Instead for nearly 4 months now.

What’s your favorite part of being a caregiver?
I like spending time with all my clients. To me the best part of caregiving is listening to the stories of my clients, and this is something I really enjoy!!

Any stories about a client that you would like to share?
I don’t know if it is an interesting story but something very different and sad. There was a client of mine who met with an accident and her entire life was turned upside down as a result. She had a clear driving record for over 60 years until she faced this accident. The accident was not her fault and yet she couldn't go back to her normal life because of what happened. This really impacted me and left a mark. I drive daily and often think about my client.

Tell us a little bit about yourself?
In Sri Lanka, I started my career as a schoolteacher after my higher education. Additionally, as I really enjoyed working with seniors, I did voluntary work in elder homes and care homes for the disabled. When I arrived in Canada, I thought of engaging in my passion of supporting seniors and started my career as a caregiver. Not just by profession, I’m a caregiver at home too, to my husband and to two daughters. I’m the eldest in my family and favourite child of my parents!
