Last Sunday (Sep 17), the Home Instead team had the incredible opportunity to join hands with the Burnaby community and participate in the Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research at the Swangard Stadium. Volunteers and participants alike were buzzing with excitement, donning their Terry Fox jerseys, pins, and sporting heartfelt signs to commemorate the occasion. The day was filled with unity, inspiration, robust participation from all age groups including community seniors, and a profound sense of purpose to honor Terry Fox's legacy and create awareness for cancer research.

While cancer is a prevalent health concern in Canada (and elsewhere), its incidence among seniors is even more worrisome, as statistical studies have shown the risk of cancer increasing with age. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, seniors aged 65 and older account for a significant portion of cancer diagnoses. In 2020, it was estimated that about 53% of all new cancer cases occurred in this age group.

Thankfully with research advancements in the field oncology, many seniors with cancer are surviving longer, and living healthier lives in their own homes, through appropriate medical care and the support of family and professional caregivers.

It was an exceptional experience for the Home Instead team to see the enthusiasm among the participants and meet and learn about the life stories of some truly inspiring members of Burnaby’s community.

As we continue to support this important cause, we honor Terry Fox’s memory and move one step closer to a world without cancer, particularly for our senior citizens who bear a significant burden of this disease.
