Jimmy Stewart and Peach Cobbler
Mom and Dad met at a dance in Anniston. She was a student at Jacksonville State Teacher's College and he was a young soldier stationed at Fort McClellan. He said she was the prettiest girl he'd ever seen. They lindy-hopped all evening and, before the last dance ended, he made her promise he could take her to the Calhoun Movie Theater the next night. Mom says they fell in love watching Jimmy Stewart, but Dad always said, with a wink, that it wasn't until he tasted Mom's peach cobbler that he knew she was the one.
Sweet Home Alabama
After Dad got out of the Army, they bought the house just outside of Tuscaloosa where they raised four kids. I remember watching Crimson Tide football on Saturday afternoons and spending rainy days at the Museum of Natural History. In summer we'd beg to go canoeing on Holt Lake. Winter always included a trip to downtown Northport to see the holiday displays in shop windows. The house is filled with photos of those days.
Dealing with Change
Our jobs have spread us kids all over the South. We visit when we can and help out with repairs. Mom and Dad love seeing the great-grandchildren running through that old house. But we're all worried about our folks being alone there. They love their home and all the memories it holds, but they really need help with some of the daily tasks that are getting harder. How can we help them stay in their beloved home?
Give Them the Help They Need at Home with Home Instead®
When family members or friends aren't able to help the older adults they love, Home Instead Care Professionals can. With a network of locations across Alabama, and worldwide, Home Instead is all about taking care of older family members long-term in the homes they've enjoyed and treasured. We provide a range of services including companionship, meal preparation, light housekeeping, medication reminders, shopping, errands—everything you'd do for your loved one, and more—to give you peace of mind, whether you live several states away or in the next county.
Inspired by a Personal Experience
It was Paul and Lori Hogan's own personal experience caring for their 100-year-old grandmother in her home that inspired them to launch Home Instead in 1994. They realized many families had the same need for non-medical in-home care and elder companionship that could help seniors live independently at home. The demand for these important services has been so great, that the company's network now has 800 locally owned franchises across North America and around the globe.
