Memorable Family Adventures
When my brothers and I were small, Mom and Dad couldn't afford overnight vacations. Instead, they'd pile us into the station wagon for day trips. Legs stuck to the hot vinyl seat, the three of us squirmed our way across New Mexico. We visited ghost towns, cliff dwellings and hot springs. We examined petroglyphs, fished on the Rio Grande and explored Carlsbad Caverns, where it was mercifully cool. No matter how bored we thought we were, Dad's enthusiasm always won us over and made each trip fun.
The Original Do-It-Yourself Team
Somehow, Mom and Dad saved enough money to buy a little rancher outside of Las Cruces. They were so happy and proud. Together, they stripped wallpaper, fixed plumbing and refinished floors, turning a run-down house into our home. When I was nine, Mom put a paintbrush in my hand so I could help, too. My little brothers were so jealous!
Changing Roles
Today, my parents still live in that house, and the oak mantle is just one of many beautiful touches Dad lovingly put on the place. My folks are still the same fun-loving people, with a can-do outlook, and they're determined to stay in their home. As Mom's arthritis has gotten worse, Dad's stepped up to do the cooking and cleaning. Yet during my last visit, he looked so tired. I noticed piles of paperwork and his wood shop has cobwebs. With my brothers in Albuquerque and me in Santa Fe, we live too far away to help regularly, but we're concerned that taking care of the house—and of Mom—is wearing Dad down.

Inspired by a Personal Experience
It was Paul and Lori Hogan's own personal experience caring for their 100-year-old grandmother in her home that inspired them to launch Home Instead in 1994. They realized many families had the same need for non-medical in-home care and elder companionship that could help seniors live independently at home. The demand for these important services has been so great, that the company's network now has 800 locally owned franchises across North America and around the globe.
