When my brothers and I were small, Mom and Dad felt it was important to teach us to be independent and self-sufficient. We grew up tending a garden and canning its bounty, but secretly envious of the kids whose moms served them cool stuff like TV dinners, Pop-Tarts or space age Tang. Family vacations usually meant camping, trout fishing or cross-country skiing in the Wasatch or Uinta Mountains. As teens, we kids grumbled from Logan to St. George ... from the Salt Flats to Moab ... hoping for a night in a motel with a pool and TV.

It's funny but, today, we all appreciate our nature-loving upbringing. Our parents still live in the old farmhouse in Heber Valley, and they're passing their green thumbs on to the grandchildren, who help them plant the garden during our summer visit. Mom and Dad are determined to stay in their home, even though Mom's arthritis has gotten worse. Dad does most of the cooking and cleaning ... but during my last visit, I noticed piles of paperwork and he looked so tired. My brothers and I live too far away to help regularly, and we're concerned that taking care of the house -- and of Mom -- is wearing Dad down.
