When my brothers and I were small, Mom and Dad felt it was important to teach us to be independent and self-sufficient. We grew up tending a garden and canning its bounty, but secretly envious of the kids whose moms served them cool stuff like TV dinners, Pop-Tarts or space age Tang. Family vacations usually meant camping, trout fishing or cross-country skiing in the Grand Tetons. As teens, we kids grumbled from Yellowstone to Cheyenne ... from the Sheridan to the Big Sandy River ... hoping for a night in a motel with a pool and TV.
Staying Independent
It's funny but, today, we all appreciate our nature-loving upbringing. Our parents still live in the old farmhouse outside of Casper, and they're passing their green thumbs on to the grandchildren, who help them plant the garden during our summer visit. Mom and Dad are determined to stay in their home, even though Mom's arthritis has gotten worse. Dad does most of the cooking and cleaning ... but during my last visit, I noticed piles of paperwork and he looked so tired. My brothers and I live too far away to help regularly, and we're concerned that taking care of the house -- and of Mom -- is wearing Dad down.

Inspired by a Personal Experience
It was Paul and Lori Hogan's own personal experience caring for their 100-year-old grandmother in her home that inspired them to launch Home Instead in 1994. They realized many families had the same need for non-medical in-home care and elder companionship that could help seniors live independently at home. The demand for these important services has been so great, that the company's network now has 800 locally owned franchises across North America and around the globe.
